The New Zealand Karaka Yearling Sales finished up a few weeks ago and again, we were able to purchase two lovely types without having to break the bank.
In recent years, New Zealand-bred horses have won Australia’s best races including the AJC and VRC Derbies, Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and the Cox Plate.
In a very competitive sale, the first yearling that we purchased was a lovely staying filly by renowned sire Pentire. Pentire has always produced strong and tough horses that get better with age, he is the sire of retired superstar Xcellent and group 1 winning mare Zarita.
This filly is from the dam Big To Do who is a half sister to Croeso, the winner of a Group 1 in America, and two other stakes winners Cardell and Maytide.
She looks to be the perfect Oaks style of filly and would have great residual value as a broodmare once her racing days are over. Purchased for only $50,000NZ, she would be a great racing opportunity.
The second yearling purchased also has plenty of staying blood in his pedigree and has the looks to match. By Golan, the sire of VRC Derby winner Kibbutz, this colt is from the Montjeu mare Elsa. Elsa is a three-quarter sister to Growl, the winner of the Hobart Cup earlier this month. To say that this colt will relish a staying distance is an understatement.
Purchased for only $32,000NZ, we have again walked away with a great bargain. He will also be aimed at the 3yo Classic races such as the Derby and then the cups as an older horse.
With the lack of top staying horses in Australia, this is a great opportunity to get involved for a minimal cost. Both yearlings have arrived safely in Melbourne and will be broken in shortly.
