New Zealand import Benelli broke through for his first Australian victory with an all the way win today at Sandown.
Benelli’s first two starts in Australia suggested he was very close to a victory, and it took a very intelligent ride from jockey Craig Williams who went straight to the front from the wide barrier and he never looked in doubt.
It was a timely win for Benelli as both of his excited owners had flown in to watch him race. Jenny Laming had come down from Queensland and Michael Mannion had made the trip across from New Zealand. It was definitely worth coming to Melbourne!
Benelli will now head towards the Winter Championship Series Final at Flemington on July 4 and will be very hard to beat.
